When at home, Tucker’s favorite thing in the whole
world is to lie quietly beside you- whether at the
computer, in the kitchen, or sitting reading or
watching TV. He knows basic commands indoors, and
enjoys learning new games. He is very smart and
picks up tricks easily. He is never destructive, but
does enjoy a good piece of rawhide to chew on, or
figuring out how to get the food out of a busy ball.
Tucker could be better housetrained. He knows to go
outside, and he never, ever has an accident once
everyone goes to bed and things are quiet- but
during the day, outside stimulus (dogs passing, kids
playing) seems to excite him and sometimes he has
an accident. This also happens sometimes (but not
always) when I leave him home for a little while. We
are working on the cause. He adores riding in the car,
and sleeps peacefully while you are shopping or
wherever. He has not been crate trained- but we are
working on that too.
He does not mind being brushed, combed, bathed,
nails clipped, or ears cleaned. He does not have overly
long feathers, so he requires very little grooming. If
he grabs something outside that he shouldn’t, he will
drop it, or let you take it out of his mouth. He will
tolerate any type of collar you put on him- he just
wants to please! He does not beg or steal "people
food", and lies quietly under the dinner table when
we eat.
Outdoors, Tuck is extremely birdy. Out of an enclosed
yard, he must be kept on a leash at all times, because
he will not respond to his name once he is on the run.
A large enclosed yard or a dog park with a high fence
would be ideal because this dog LOVES to run! We
are working on commands in the yard, but he is easily
distracted.
Tucker gets along well with our other Setter. He gets
along with other dogs after a careful introduction. He
has become leash reactive- something we are
working hard on—but at this point one has to be
careful when introducing other dogs, because you
don’t know what his reaction will be. He has never
been aggressive, but he will snap from over
excitement.
He loves people- kids and strangers. He barks a lot
when people come to the door, and he can be over-
excited when they walk in, so we are careful to keep
him back from the door. Once they are in the house,
he is perfectly fine, and content to lay at a newcomer’
s feet. Commotion (kids on the go) in the house
tends to over-excite him, which I think has lead to
some accidents. On walks, he reacts to joggers, but is
more readily settled than with other dogs.
He’s up to date on all shots and neutered. Tucker is 3
1/2- 4 yrs old. When he originally came to A&B a year
ago he was recuperating from heartworm, but has
been given the all-clear from the vet.
Tucker would do well with single person, or couple, or
small family. His ideal home would be a house set
back from the street with a large fenced yard for him
to run and play. He doesn’t mind getting his collar or
leash on—but everyone would probably have an
easier time if he didn’t have to be leashed walked on
a regular basis. As I said, he is good with kids—but he
barks a lot when my 8 year old and his friends are in
and out of the house—so he would probably do
better in an environment with older kids, or none at
all. Ideally, he needs someone able to spend time
working with him through the issues that he has with
over-excitement and leash-reactivity.
Tucker is currently living in Norwalk, CT.
