Please help me to prevent my English Setter from being
euthanized. I rescued Shaina, a tri-color Llewellyn
(47-50 lbs depending on season) when she was 11
months old. She is 8 years old (May 5 is B'day). Female,
spayed, up to date on all shots. She's deaf, but reads
about 10 signs (sit, eat, inside, outside, ride in the car,
walk, no, stop, rollover).
Loves to be with her people, snuggling, tolerates
bathtime in order to be "massaged" while she lays on
the floor being blown dry. Going for long walks is what
she loves most. Riding in the car is good, too. Good
companion for long car trips. If I am upstairs and
hubby is down, she will go back and forth, pawing at the
bannister, trying to get us to be in the same room.
Shaina developed fear aggression when she was about
3. We were attacked in a park by an offleash dog. I
wish I had worked with her at the time, but my mother
died and I became ill. She has not needed to be muzzled
on walks, since where we are, we can avoid other dogs
by crossing the street, etc. Miraculously, a year ago, we
had a baby. Shaina would lick the baby and was very
curious about him. In June, Shaina had to be in the
kennel for over 2 weeks while our house was under
renovation (we were in a hotel). Our son learned to
crawl. When we returned, Shaina began to growl at him
as he approached her (on all fours). She would get up
Shaina needs to be in a home without other pets and without children, and with a complete fence (the
underground type does not work for her). She has been fine with my stepdaughter who is now 11 and who
has known her since she was 8. We cannot find a home for her through friends or family so we are hoping
there is an angel out there who would be interested in her.
Shaina takes two medications: Prednisone (2x/wk) and Atopica, currently 3x/week. The predisone is
inexpensive. The Atopica (both meds for skin allergies) has been reduced from 7x/wk to 3x/week, with the
hope of getting her to 1x/wk (she has been on it 2 months). The cost currently is about $170 for the Atopica.
If she can go down to 1x/wk, the bill would be $44/mo. The only food she can eat is Eukanuba
Kangaroo/Oats, due to her skin issues. Once a month I give her an allergy injection for wool, prepared by
Michigan State University. The cost is $42/yr.
If someone would give Shaina a good home, we can provide one month of her medicine, revolution, allergy
serum/needles, and 3 big bags of her food, crates, etc. We love her so. Our only alternative is to euthanize
her, and it just does not feel like the right solution.
If we do not hear from anyone by August 5, we must have her euthanized. She is a wonderful soul.
and go into other rooms, always finding an escape.
On Aug 13, she was in our bedroom on the floor at
the foot of the bed. Our son was crawling toward
her and she growled, as I went to get between
them she bit him. She had been cornered. We
believe Shaina sees him as a little dog, now that he
can crawl on all fours. Our vet, techs and kennel
workers are as shocked as we are and believe that
her fear agression, along with the changes we have
had to deal with in the last 2 months, several weeks
in the kennel and our son crawling caused this to
happen. She is a sweet dog, in the wrong situation.
Several of our vet techs have each said they would
take her, if they did not have pets at home.
