Sammi is the sweetest pooch I could've been blessed
to foster. She really only barks at the dog park when
she sees battles going down or experiences a rare
moment of jealousy when another dog tries to nuzzle
up to me. She is endlessly curious and would love
room to roam. She needs a fenced in yard because if
given the opportunity she will bolt for the open
fields...luckily I've never had too hard of a time
getting her back but I also live on a culdesac. I do
worry she would run right out into a busy street so
she definitely needs to be on a leash.
When I first began fostering Sammi she was very
nervous and wagged her tail so hard it bled...for a few
months she had a scabby hairless last 5 inches of a
tail. She also walked as if she had a bad back or was
being punished, timid and hunched.
It didn't take long at all for us to bond and
soon she learned how to trust and that she
was loved. Though she is still prone to
wagging viciously we mostly have it under
control and all of her hair has grown back.
She no longer stands hunched, and she smiles
all the time. She'll also Roo for you in the
mornings. She has learned how to sit, wait,
and lie "down." For the three of those she
reads hands signs as well. She also rolls over
and is learning to shake.
It is believed Sammi is between 8 - 9 years old
and she takes a half tab of glucosamine every
day and subsists on gluten free dog food. If
she eats gluten, which includes barley, rye,
malt, and wheat flour, she will get gastro
upsets and extremely itchy. She will also
refuse to eat. If she is fed the proper food she
seems to be in great health!
I potty trained her and after 5 months of no going
in the house she's begun doing a morning ritual by
the sliding door if she's gotta go and I'm still in
bed. This has happened three times and it's all
been within the past week. I did have a house
guest so I'm wondering if this new bustle in the
house had anything to do with it.
Overall, Sammi is the perfect dog (if you don't
mind lots of shedding) and seems to be okay
around children. I don't have much experience
with her around babies but I do have a cat and she
taunts her but they get along well enough to both
laze around each other when I'm home. She loves
to snuggle and bury her head into you, and would
relish the opportunity to settle into her forever
home!
