Norman is a happy and intelligent English Setter mix. He is 6-7 years young, medium size at 40lbs and young at heart. Norm has a gentle personality and warms to women very fast. His quiet loyalty will steal your heart. He is a wonderful companion dog and does well with adults. He has some mild separation anxiety and we are working on crate training.
Norm is not very birdie, but he has a large fenced back yard and loves to chase deer, armadillo, and squirrels along the fence. He walks reasonably well on a leash and loves to do so. Norman also rides well in the car and would ride in a bike basket if it meant being with his owner.
At play, Norman simply likes to chase around the house or outside. He also likes stuffed squeaky toys and various chew toys. He loves to chase balls, but often plays “keep away” when it’s his turn to return the ball.
Norm‘s head looks ES, but his hair is shorter, with the exception of fringe on his ears, back legs and tail. If you like the ES personality, but prefer a dog that is somewhat smaller and calmer, Norman may be just the dog for you.
Norm will do well in a household of adults. He warms to women instantly, but is initially wary of men. He has no problems with my husband and father who are around frequently. He was initially intimidated by tall men, with lower/louder voices and baseball hats. Encounters would result in submissive urination, but have not recently.
Norm does well in the house alone when we leave. However, if we are not leaving the yard or are going bike riding, he will scratch at the door and has done some damage to the door jam. This happens intermittently and hence the reason we are working on crate training. He does well in his crate with the door closed, until he is left alone.
Norman has nice manners. He follows commands such as sit, stay and lay down. He has a warm personality, loves to be showered with attention, but will find his own place to lay and rest when it is not “his time”. He sleeps in a bed next to my night stand and otherwise rests in a crate in our family area. His one “treat” of the day is to lie on the couch with me while my son goes to sleep and I read quietly. His loyalty is unquestionable.
Norman has bitten children in the recent past. It is unusual because Norm has been in this home for 2 years and has not bitten prior to the last six months. No bites resulted in greater than a scratch. I also think he has developed an escalating sense of protection for me and my family. We have worked with a trainer to control some of these instinctual behaviors and he has responded well. The trainer feels that the bites with young children are correction bites and she is available to talk with perspective adopters about Norm. Norman should be in a home with adults and no children younger than teenagers.
