Marley

Marley was dumped at a local humane society.  I
mean DUMPED.  The guy walked in, handed someone
the end of the lead and walked out.  Never completed
paperwork or gave any information. The folks at the
humane society named the dog Marley because of his
dreadlocks.  He was that matted.  And he was
obviously a serious victim of abuse as well as neglect.
BUT they knew one of their obedience trainers has a
friend who saves Setters, who has a real hard time
saying, "No," especially to the desperate cases, and
Marley was a mess.

So, Marley came to me, and I told Above & Beyond
I'd have to live with him for a while, see where his
head was, and see if I could rehabilitate him.  He had
definitely been abused.  He even had a sore on one
hip that concerned me, but it was like a bed sore the
vet said. He was so skinny, and laying on that hip, he
had gotten a sore because he had no "padding."  I've
been working on fattening him up ever since he
arrived, but it has been slow going.  But he''s looking
better and better all the time.  Quite the handsome
boy.

Well, Marley must have good genes!  He has come
around splendidly.  He is very friendly and even gives
kisses now.   He has gotten very affectionate with me,
and was a total gentleman at his intake exam with the
veterinarian.  I'm so proud of him.

Marley is about 9-10 years old and he's a handsome
tri-color male with a big, broad chest.

I suspect he was stuck in a crate and not let out, as
he will pee in his crate if not gotten out in a very
timely basis.  We are also still working on
house-training.

I recommend that Marley go to a home where he will
be an only dog.  He needs and deserves the individual
attention.  He really is a sweetheart and is making
greater strides on a daily basis.  He is getting so
affectionate.  It's as if he has decided it's safe to love
someone.  I've fostered a great many dogs over the
years, and in recent years many Setters, and they
have each been special in their own way, and maybe
it's because of his history, but I think Marley is a
remarkable dog, to have come so far from the
cowering, frightened, defensive dog I first met back
at Christmas 2009 to the affectionate, charming,
sweet guy he is now.

UPDATE:  6/29/11

Marley has an enlarged heart/slight cardiac disease
and will need to be on Enalapril and Lasix for the rest
of his life.  At some point his dosage of Lasix may need
to be increased.  Whomever adopts him must be able
to make a 100% commitment to this medical need for
Marley for the rest of his life.

Marley is a very special boy who obviously had a hard
life for many years before he came into A&B's
program and my life.  He is such a sweet boy.  He still
occasionally urinates in his crate, and I don't know if
that problem will ever be completely solved, so his
adoptor needs to understand that Marley needs
patience and understanding.  While every Setter I've
ever met has a special sweetness to their
temperament, Marley has learned to trust, learned
what it is like to be loved and to give love in return,
and for this his sweetness is so very touching.   I do
not know if there are words to express just how
wonderful this boy truly is.
