IN August

August is a 3 yr old blue belton English Setter field setter that
was brought in as a stray to a busy, high-kill Kentucky shelter.

I broke him out of jail the Friday after Thanksgiving '08 and
have been fostering him since.

He is now neutered, heartworm negative, up to date on
shots, and has a "Basic 1" diploma from obedience class.

Indy August does okay with cats and other dogs with proper
introduction. There was some grumbling between him and
my male Doberman in the beginning, but that resolved after
neutering August and with time and training.
Originally he was a terrific escape artist and actually got away from me on
three occasions.  Luckily each time he went to a male stranger and was
returned unharmed.  When I leave the house I give a firm “stay, I’ll see ya
later” and he will sit and watch me leave without trying to escape.  He also
can be trusted to run in the fenced in back yard with the other dogs and I
can pop into the house briefly and then back out to supervise recess.
He is given the run of the house and doesn't get into things.
August is not a big fan of being crated and will vocalize his
disdain.  Since he is totally trustworthy loose in the house (no
potty accidents, no meddling with the cats, etc) it seems to work
out okay for a regular workday.  Again, you just have to make
sure you have his attention for a sit/stay before opening the
front door.

IF I have to be opening and closing the front door a lot then I
put him and my personal dogs in my bedroom and close the
door.  August has a love affair with doors and he knows that
they lead OUTSIDE where the birds are.  He is like a
greyhound...can NEVER be off-leash!
August likes toys and especially likes to hide them for
later.  He is affectionate and likes to cuddle on the
couch and will guard the bathroom door as he sleeps
on my clothes when I take a bath.  He is a very social
boy!

He likes all people, not afraid of men, etc.  August's
hobbies include tail wagging, yipping at birds, and
snacking on the goodies in the compost heap.
He even tolerates a bath very well.  I have to physically
LIFT him into the tub, but once he is in there he enjoys
the process, even allowing me to leave on a medicated
shampoo for 15 minutes without trying to squirm away.

August is still a bit of a diamond in the rough but would
make a great pet for a single adult or adult couple with
older kids.  He is still a bit clumsy in showing his affection
so I would not advise somebody with young children to
adopt him.  August needs a home with a fence (4 ft is
adequate), no male dogs, and someone who can deal
with his chronic atopic itching and scratching.  He is good
with female dogs, cats, and all people.
