What can you say about a dog named
Huckleberry? He’s the sweetest boy you ever
want to meet. He’s from Georgia and believed to
be around nine years old, but you wouldn’t know
it. He came into rescue heartworm positive. He
has finished his heartworm treatment and will be
neutered before adoption. Sadly, x-rays showed
that someone, sometime in his life, shot him with
buckshot. He still has at least 20 pieces of
buckshot in his chest. His front teeth are worn
down, but other than that, my vet said he is in
very good health.
When I first met Huck, he was very shy and didn’
t want to come to me. I sat on the floor across
the room from him, and slowly he came over and
crawled into my lap. That’s all it took for me to
want to foster him. Now, when someone comes
to the door, he barks and runs over to meet
them. He’s still a little shy, but warms up to
anyone who wants to give him some love.
Huck is house and crate trained. He walks well on
a leash. He knows sit and down and will come
when called. He is a very good “poster dog” for
A&B Rescue. He was at the A&B Rescue booth at
the Harrisburg PA Kennel Club Dog Show and at
the Celtic Fling at the Renaissance Faire (PA).
Everyone loved him at the dog show because he
decided that his favorite place to sit was in one of
the volunteer’s laps. He had his picture taken by
many a dog lover and was petted by just about
everyone walking by. He loved the attention.
Huck’s favorite activity is trying to find out where
that darn old cat is hiding. First thing in the
morning, he’s looking for the cat. He usually just
likes to watch, and won’t give chase unless the
other dogs do. He likes to chew on soup bones
and once in a while will play with a squeaky toy.
He gets along well with the other dogs, but I
don’t think he would mind being an only dog.
I know he’s a little bit older, but he deserves to
have a home where someone can spend lots of
time with him and just love him. That’s all he’s
looking for. I’ve tried to figure out why someone
would shoot this beautiful boy, but there could
not possibly be a reason. The best I can figure
out is that he was hanging around someone’s
place looking for food or comfort and that
person didn’t have a heart. When you meet him,
I think you too will have to come up with the
same conclusion.
If you have room in your heart for a Huckleberry,
please contact the rescue. You will be so very
glad that you did.
