Happy is a BIG boy, an orange belton from down in
southeastern Kentucky, in the mountains. He was
found running wild on a mountain, and some nice
people took him home and tried to find his owner,
but no luck. He didn't get along with their older
retriever who had been The Boss for years, so
these nice folks asked Above & Beyond for help, so
Happy came to me for fostering.
He was quite the wild man when he came here, but
is gradually settling down. He's intelligent and very,
very playful. Loves to retrieve. I have to be totally
honest, Happy is a handful, BUT for the right
person who is patient and has a sense of humor
and uses entirely positive motivational methods,
Happy will be a great dog. He definitely needs to
be adopted by someone with strong bird dog
experience and familiarity with motivational training
techniques.
he progress he has made in the time he has been
with me is a testimony to his basic good
temperament and intelligence. He is definitely a
smart boy!
We don't know how long he was "homeless" and
running wild on that mountain in Appalachia, but it
was quite some time, and he was very skinny when
the kind people took him home with them. He has
been gaining weight, and the progress he has made
behaviorally shows that he is learning quickly, and
he really does crave human companionship.
Because of his energy level, I highly recommend a
home with no children, not even older ones as he's
big, strong and energetic. Because of his strong
prey drive, no cats. But that strong prey drive
means that if you are looking for a dog who can
also be a hunting dog for you as well as a home
companion, Happy would be an awesome choice!
I think he'd be great with a single person or a
couple. And I think he'd do best as an "only child."
He can be bossy with other dogs, especially other
males but with females as well.
He is totally crate trained and house trained. He
sleeps in his crate at night, and you have to be fully
prepared when you go to open that crate first
thing in the morning, because he's like a
thoroughbred in the starting gate. He wakes up
"rarrin' to go."
I know there is the PERFECT home out there for
Happy! If you are a single adult or a couple of
adults and you want that one special Setter to be
your baby, Happy is the guy for you! As he
matures more and has more consistent love and
training, he's going to really blossom into a
wonderful companion.
