Gemma was saved by an A&B volunteer from a home where she was forced to live outside and have litter after litter of puppies with no medical care for several years. She was infested with mange and fleas and ticks. She has recovered from all of these ailments and she is just beautiful!
Gemma is very sweet, gentle and timid. For the first couple of weeks in her foster home, she preferred to be in her crate at all times, even with the door open. Sometimes she still likes the comfort and security of her crate. At first, when she met new people, she would act submissive and even pee a little. Lately, she has been joining the other dogs in her foster home in greeting people at the door, showing that she is gaining confidence and courage. She loves people and enjoys belly rubs and body scritches. She will come when you call her, wagging her entire body the whole way. When she is feeling nervous, she will show you her belly.
I have not seen Gemma's entire personality because she is not allowed to run and play during her heartworm treatment. (Her treatment is now completed.) She can't wait to start going for walks and seeing the world. She is looking forward to chasing butterflies with her foster siblings. We think Maggie is approximately 6 to 8 years old, but her soul is much younger than that. She has missed out on so much that she has a lot of living left to do.
Gemma gets along great with all of the dogs she has met and they all love her too. She cries at first when she is left alone, and will probably do best in a home with at least one other dog to keep her company. She is not interested in cats; her philosophy is live and let live. She has not been around children much, but I think she will do well once I start introducing her to the neighborhood children because she is so gentle and loving.
Gemma is going to fit into any home that is full of love and willing to help her learn that the world is a fun, kind place. She is a very easy dog to take care of; all she wants to do is snuggle and sit in the shade in the yard and be peaceful. As time goes on, I am hopeful that she will run and play and maybe even be a stinker from time to time! But for now, she is just relaxing and enjoying being safe and healthy and having her entire happy life in front of her.
UPDATE Sept 24th. Gemma is finished with her heartworm treatment and has really come out of her shell. She loves to run and play in the backyard. She has started going for walks around the neighborhood and gets very excited! She runs up to anybody who wants to pet her and shows no fear. She enjoys children, but gets a little nervous if they run up to her. She is very friendly with new dogs. Gemma has a lot of personality!
Although she likes to hunt bugs in the yard, I don't think she has a career as a hunting dog! Gemma is afraid of thunder and gunshots. She will try to escape from the yard if she hears them. Gemma can fit through very small gaps, so she will need a home with a secure fence. Once, when Gemma got loose in my neighborhood, she came right back to me when I called her. Also, Gemma will chew and eat leashes and collars that are left on the floor. I have not seen her chew on anything else yet, but it is safest to keep things she is not supposed to chew on off of the floor.
Gemma is a joy and a pleasure to have around. She is a wonderful combination of playful and mellow. She will make a marvelous companion.
Here are a few links to videos I made to show how she plays in the yard:
