Above and Beyond English Setter Rescue
FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions About the Adoption Process) Written by June VanDemark

You may or may not have already decided to apply to adopt an English Setter from Above and
Beyond English Setter Rescue. This page is designed to help you through the application
process step by step. Hopefully, this will answer all or most of your questions.
Let’s start with A&B’s commitment to our English Setters and their adoptive families. It may
seem like there are many steps in the adoption process. This is because we at A&B are
committed to finding the right home for our Setters as well as the perfect new member for
your family.
So, the first step in the process after you have found our website is to
make sure an English Setter is the right dog for your family. Please
note that they are very high energy, “birdie”, when out in the yard.
Most Setters do settle down nicely in the house. They do require a
period of time each day to run and have some fun either in the yard or
at a dog park. We do not recommend that English Setters be allowed
to run off leash for exercise unless in a contained area. They do tend to
be runners and can be escape artists. They are usually wonderful family
members and get along very well with children. For more detailed
information, please see our About English Setters page.
The next step is to fill out an on-line application. This will then be
forwarded to our application team for review. Yes, the application
requires some detail. The more information you give us the quicker your
application can be processed.
Now you’ve hit the submit button and are wondering what the next
step will be. You will receive a letter from our Point of Contact person,
June VanDemark. After that you will receive a phone call from a member
of our application team. During that phone call, you may ask any
questions you may have, and we will ask you any questions we may have.
After that we will go on and check your personal and
veterinarian references. The final step in the application
process is the home visit. After the home visit is completed
you will be assigned a buddy from the applications team.
Your buddy will help you find the perfect Setter for you and
your family. When you find a Setter or Setters you are
interested in hearing about, your buddy will get you all
information you could possibly want and/or put you in
touch with the foster family.
You may be wondering about our foster home
program and how that works. All our A&B dogs go
from a foster home to a forever home. We do not
allow a dog to go from a shelter immediately to a
forever home without being evaluated first. Once
again this helps us help you find your perfect new
family member. I have had one foster dog and found
it to be a wonderful experience. It is just amazing
watching the change in a dog after he/she feels
comfortable in an environment. And, yes you can see
the change, they stop looking at the floor and start
watching the humans around them. They start to
play with toys and other animals in their foster home.
Now, you’ve found the perfect Setter and made up your mind! You’ve been in touch with
your buddy and the foster family to speak for “your” Setter. So, you are probably wondering
how that Setter will find his/her way to you and how much it is going to cost to get your dog
to you?" There is NO charge to have your adoptive dog transported to you. You will, of
course be responsible for the $245 adoption fee. All our dogs are transported by MoStar
Transports. And because MoStar posts on lists everywhere for volunteer drivers, there is no
charge for transport of your dog. Our only requirement is that you, as the adopter are
expected to fill the last leg of your dog’s transport to show your commitment to your new
family member. For some examples of transports, please see our Transports page.
You may also wonder how long the application process will take from start to finish? We
strive to make the process as short and uncomplicated for the applicant as we can. Please
keep in mind throughout the application process that all members of A&B are volunteers.
Many of us have full time jobs, families, pets of our own and possibly a foster dog. So
please be patient with us and we will be patient with you as well. The application process
from start to finish can take a couple of weeks or longer. It all depends on how many
applications we have, how far away you are from our volunteers and the amount of time it
takes to set up a home visit. This is another reason why we ask that you complete our
application as thoroughly as you can.
We hope you have found your experience with Above and Beyond English Setter Rescue
to be a pleasant one. From the beginning, where you filled out your application to your
English Setter being transferred to your loving arms, and then becoming a part of the
wonderful extended family that is A&B.
If you have questions that are not answered here, please e-mail anyone on our Contacts
page and they will get the answer for you.
