Disney

Disney, a tri-colored female, spayed field English
Setter, and has been in her foster home since August
2007. We determined that she is now about 1 ½
years old. When she came to us, she weighed about
30 lbs – she is now a firm 37 lbs.

She is very friendly with other dogs, except when she
decides she wants to rough and tumble with them.
This active behavior came about after we put her on
Dasequin – a chew type pill that helps her with her hip
dysphasia.

It was noticed in August that Disney could go up
stairs, but not down a full flight. She could not get up
onto the couch (I let my doggies on the couch) and
also noticed other things about her gait – which was
not too fast.

A&B found out she was given up by the breeder
because of slight hip dysphasia – after x-raying Disney,
the X-rays showed severe dysphasia – especially in
her right hip. Thus the Dasequin, which she gets in
her food once a day.

Well, what a difference – this shy, quiet little girl
became very active, running around the doggie pen
with her friend, Loni. Her little personality has
blossomed – when she goes to get her nylabone or
any other toy, she approaches and then pounces at
it, and runs away. She’ll do this 3 or 4 times before
she goes to grab it.

Disney is very lovable; especially with the human
she adopts (me). The first night she slept with me,
she was at my head the entire night. After every
meal, she comes over to me while I do the dishes,
and sits right up against me. She has also adopted
my other female English Setter – they will cuddle
with each other on the couch.
There are no cats in my house so being cat
friendly is a big question. I do have a
parrot and after a few weeks, Disney no
longer jumped onto her cage and now
leaves her alone. I have not had the
chance to introduce Disney to children as I
have none of my own.

House and crate training has not been
easy. She has been here 4 months and still
has accidents in her crate and in the house
– although they have been greatly
reduced. I am not sure whether it’s
because she may be uncomfortable more
than normal due to the hip dysphasia or
what – it’s a mystery.
Disney also has to be watched because she will chew! This started happening after she went on the
Dasequin. She will chew wood, chair legs, electrical wiring (whether plugged in or not), shoes, boots – etc.

Disney loves to run in the play area (about 150 feet by 25 feet). She zooms around, does her business and
then comes to me to go into the house.

All in all, Disney is a charming little English Setter who really would love to go to her forever home.
