Dez is a 3 year old setter mix weighing 58 pounds. I am
not sure what he is mixed with. He has a setter boddy
and ticking with a big blocky head. He has been a
fortunate boy to have been rescued by Above and
Beyond English Setter Rescue as well as to have been a
shelter favorite in a shelter in rural Georgia where dogs
rarely make it out.
It is easy to see why he was a shelter favorite, he is very
sweet and mild mannered. After two months of being at
the shelter, well beyond the time that they can keep
dogs, the staff had no choice but to give Dez and end of
life date. That's where A&B stepped in. Within three days
A&B had a foster home lined up and a mini transport
scrambled into place to get Dez from the shelter to his
foster home. Dez had no vet care while at the shelter
(there was simply no funding for vet care) and was
scheduled in for a full vetting and neutering. It was
during his vet visit that it was discovered that he is
strongly heartworm positive.

Upon leaving the vet Dez's foster mom was waiting at a
traffic light and noticed two rainbows, one ended right
at the intersection where she and Dez where waiting.
Dez's foster mom took this as a sign that Dez's luck
would continue and somehow his heartworm
treatment would be funded so that he could go on to
the life he has long waited for.
Dez has made it through his Heartworm treatment and
is in week two of four weeks of inactivity and seems to
be recovering nicely. While he isn't all setter, he is so
deserving of his new life too. Someone has been smiling
on him from the first day he was at the shelter. In the
staff keeping him there for months beyond his
euthanasia date, to A&B getting him sprung from the
shelter in a matter of days, to the rainbows
accompanying him on his way home from the vet's
office and his HW diagnosis.

I have been fostering for seven years now and I'd
have to honestly say that Dez really is one of the
sweetest dogs I have met. He is gentle, sweet,
happy, plays well with others, rides contentedly on
the back seat of the car, walks well on leash has a
lower activity level, gets along with all of my dogs,
and is potty trained. He loves snoozing on his dog
bed and playing with stuffies, chew bones and rope
toys. As he continues to feel better I see his playful
side beginning to emerge. He would make someone
a great family member, but he needs to continue
getting well first. Once his four weeks of inactivity
are up he will need to be retested for heartworms in
six months. He is also on monthly heartgard.
Please do put in your application to adopt Dez
if you are looking for a very loving and laidback
family member.
