Birdie

Birdie is a happy, playful and very sweet orange and white,
female English Setter. She is about 1 years old, spayed and
of medium size. She stands 22 inches tall and weighs about
35 pounds. Birdie was found as a stray in North Carolina.
She is still a bit thin and should probably way around 40
pounds. Birdie is otherwise a healthy girl. She is heartworm
negative and on heartworm preventatives. She did at one
point test slightly positive for Lyme disease but has had no
known outbreaks.
Birdie is a very friendly girl. She is great with
our two English Setters (we have a male and a
female.) She also loves to go to the dog park
and plays very well with all the dogs in the
park, she loves to play chase! Birdie is also
great with children of any age and would make
a great family dog. She likes to play but also
loves to snuggle up on the couch with anyone
who will sit down with her. It is not known
how she is around cats. Birdie loves to spend
time outside, pointing and chasing birds and
squirrels. She is very “birdie!” But she prefers
to be where her family is, and if everyone else
goes in, Birdie is happy relax inside as well.
Birdie is recently housebroken. She has shown great
progress since we took her in as a foster dog, but
might still have an occasional accident. She is a
young dog and she will sometimes find toys and
other objects to chew on. Giving her plenty of
bones, pig or cow ears to chew have helped. Birdie
has free range of our house (when we are at home)
and she handles that well. Birdie is also crate trained
and uses a crate when we are at work. She does not
love the crate (probably because our other two dogs
do not use crates) but she will go in when necessary
and settles in nicely. Birdie is skittish around loud
sounds or anything new, but once she sees where
the sound comes from she is okay. We have also
noticed that Birdie is skittish when approached by
tall men and will bark at them. Once she had a
chance to sniff and say: “hello” she is fine.
Birdie is an athletic and bright dog. She is fast and
has a beautiful gate when she runs across a field.
We were told that Birdie in the past has jumped
fences. She loves to go for walks and she also
makes a great running partner. She will pull on a
regular leash but walks well in a harness (we use
the Gentle Leader Easy Walk Harness.) Birdie
knows a few basic commands and learned “sit”
and “paw” in just a few short sessions. She listens
to her name and comes when you call her, even
when she is outside. Birdie would probably both
enjoy and benefit from continued obedience
training.
Birdie is a very sweet and affectionate dog. She wants
nothing more than to be loved. This sweet girl deserves
a forever home where she can feel safe and loved. Can
you help Birdie?
