Bandit is a little 2 year old setter girl weighing only
about 29 lbs. She probably should weigh about 32
lbs, but no more. We’re working on getting her
weight up and she is fully cooperating with a very
healthy appetite. She is a great dog with lots of
spunk and affection.
Bandit has come such a long way in the 3 weeks she
has been with us. She has learned to keep her paws
off the tables and counters, to sit and wait before
she goes out, not to jump on people (or at least try
not to), and generally what a house is and what is
expected in one. She was also spayed 3 days after
she arrived (what kind of welcoming was that?).
Before Bandit arrived here she was a hunter’s dog
kept in an outside kennel 24/7. So a house has been a big adjustment. Already she is doing great with
her housetraining, is crate trained, knows how to heel, and is trained to invisible fencing. Most of all she
has learned all about snuggles, cuddles, and love, and she doesn’t want to go back to the old life.
Since some people don’t like dogs on the furniture,
we have not allowed her on furniture here in her
foster home. I did have one lapse and let her on the
bed which is something she doesn’t want to forget.
She does love the bed even though I keep telling her
it was just a little mistake on my part. At night she
happily sleeps in her crate (though she would take an
invitation to the bed in a heart beat).
In typical setter form, Bandit is 2 dogs in one: the
calm inside dog that likes to snuggle and be loved,
and the crazy, birdy, outside dog that likes to point,
flush, search, and even jump at birds. (Sometimes,
looking out the window results in bringing the outside
dog in). Watching Bandit in the yard is far better than
any entertainment on T.V.
I highly recommend that her forever home invests in
a bird feeder. Few things make me laugh harder than
watching this dog jump up in the air just to get a
really good smell of the bird feeder. Sometimes she
even bats it with her paws or pokes it with her nose.
It is really funny to watch. I think she may have been
a little too aggressive with the birds for the hunter ;-)
Bandit does not currently live with another dog but
seems to be dog friendly. She has done very well at the
dog park even with up to 8 dogs at a time. She likes to
race with a standard poodle that is twice her size. She
also spent a weekend with a dog sitter who came with a
rather dominant dog and did fine with her. She hasn’t
been fully cat tested. My guess is she would definitely
chase cats that run (who wouldn’t), but while on leash
she tried to play with a neighbor’s cat that didn’t run. I’
ll work on investigating this further. Bandit likes
children, but has had a problem with my 5 year old who
likes to boss her around. She is a dominant dog and
doesn’t like to be bossed around particularly by
someone as small as a 5 year old. She has had no
problem with our guests ages 1,2, & 4, even with the
whole gang of 5 at once, but she has had dominance
issues with our in-house child. I would recommend that
Bandit go to a home with older children (no young
children). She loves an active life style and much of the
time even seems to love our 5 year old, but she does
get tired of the orders after a while.
If you’re looking for a great looking, athletic, confident,
smart, fun dog – Bandit might just be the girl for you. If
you’re looking for a couch potato, keep looking.
